Most people have a junk/catch all drawer; I have a cabinet. It is the bane of my existence. It has everything from tupperware, foil pans, even a gift bag from last Christmas. When I open it to take out a muffin tin everything falls out. I literally have to stuff it back in. It's embarrassing and it's real.
I said that in the Fall/Holiday Series we were going to start in the kitchen. The hub of activity for the family is almost always the kitchen. Cookie baking, turkey dinner, holiday parties and more are centered around food. It's important to make sure that our kitchens are in order.
It might seem overwhelming to some because your kitchen is SO crazy, disorganized and chaotic. So we are going to take the rest of October to organize it one step at a time.
Here is the challenge:
For the next 15 days we are going to tackle the clutter. We are going to commit to 10 minutes a day, at the most, cleaning out one drawer or cabinet at a time. If 10 minutes daily isn't plausible then do 1 hour on the weekend. I prefer daily because its quick and easy.
Start with your worst cabinet or drawer.
- Take everything out
- Clean out the inside of the cabinet or drawer (I used Method Multi-purpose cleaner)
- Now its time to look at what we have and get rid of what we don't use. I had 6 cookie sheets! A bit much, so I gave 2 to my daughter who needed some. If things are in bad condition then get rid of them. Be ruthless.
- After you know what you want to keep it is then time to organize it. (I get most of my organizational tools from Dollar Tree. Walmart is another good place to find inexpensive tools to help.)
- Repeat this process with every drawer or cabinet. Clearing out one a day is a great goal to help win the war on kitchen clutter.
Like I said this was my worst cabinet. It took me a total of 10 minutes to do. I am so happy with the results. Because I only did one it helps me stay motivated to do the next one. The awesome feeling of completing the cabinet is still fresh when I tackle the next one. If I try to organize all at once then I get overwhelmed and quit. Breaking up a big project into little pieces helps me to stay motivated.
